Even though Memorial Day is popularly thought of (and portrayed in the media) as the “beginning of the summer travel season,” the real reason we have the day off is to remember, and honor those who died while serving this country. It’s one of those holidays where it doesn’t make much sense to say “happy Memorial Day, neighbor,” because for many it’s not a happy day. It’s a somber day. With that said, there’s no reason why you can’t, or shouldn’t travel somewhere for the weekend. And believe it or not, there are many places you can go where you can honor the fallen.
Washington, D.C.
This one is one of the more obvious places many may go. Not only are there plenty of memorials honoring the fallen, but Arlington National Cemetery is nearby. In addition, DC hosts the biggest Memorial Day parade in the country. They also host a National Memorial Day Concert that you can attend (or watch on PBS). Philadelphia, PA As one of the oldest cities in the country, Philly has a long and storied history. You can see the Liberty Bell, a symbol of our independence. The city is also home to the National Constitution Center.
New Orleans, LA
Probably not the first place one would think of to go to for Memorial Day, but you’d be surprised. It’s home to a (from what I hear) fantastic WWII Museum. What better way to remember those who died serving our country than by going there? Oahu, HI Hawaii is home to Pearl Harbor. The memorials and museums are popular tourist attractions year round, but certainly worth going to during the Memorial Day holiday. FDR was right: December 7th, 1941 is certainly a “date which will live in infamy.” Bottom line You can both honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and travel to great places in this great country. Because that’s what those who join the armed forces fight for. Our freedom. Our freedom to do what we want, when we want. Without them, the United States of America would cease to exist.
