Costa Rica, with coasts on both the Caribbean and Pacific, is renowned for its beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and incredible biodiversity. It’s no wonder the Central American country gets roughly 2 million tourists from all over the world a year. If you're planning a trip to Costa Rica, here's what you need to know.

When to Go

The best time to visit Costa Rica really depends on your travel preferences. If you're looking for sunny weather and warm temperatures, the dry season, which runs from December to April, is the best time to go. During this time, the beaches are perfect for swimming and surfing, and the rainforest is less humid.

However, keep in mind that this is peak tourist season, so prices may be higher, and the popular destinations may be crowded. If you're looking to save money and don't mind a bit of rain, the rainy season, which runs from May to November, can also be a great time to visit.

During this time, the rainforest is lush and green, and the countryside is teeming with life. The afternoon showers are usually short-lived and can actually add to the natural beauty of the country.

How to Get There
Most travelers will be able to fly into the country's capital, San Jose, which is served by the Juan Santamaria International Airport. From there, you can either take a domestic flight or rent a car to get to your destination.

If you're planning to explore the country, renting a car is a great option, as it gives you the freedom to move around and explore at your own pace. However, keep in mind that driving in Costa Rica can be challenging due to narrow roads and, well… unpredictable… drivers.

If you prefer to let someone else do the driving, public transportation is also available. Buses and shuttles are affordable and can take you to most tourist destinations.

Accommodations

Not surprisingly, Costa Rica offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets and travel styles. From luxurious resorts to budget-friendly hostels, there's something for everyone.

If you're looking for a luxurious experience, the country offers many all-inclusive resorts that offer stunning views of the beach or rainforest. For those looking for a more authentic experience, there are plenty of charming bed and breakfasts and small hotels scattered throughout the country.

If you're traveling on a budget and don’t have the miles and points to help travel hack, hostels are a great option. Costa Rica has many hostels that offer comfortable accommodation at an affordable price. Hostels are also a great way to meet other travelers and make new friends.

Food and Drink

Costa Rican cuisine is as delicious as it is varied, with influences from Spanish, African, and Indigenous cultures. Some must-try dishes include gallo pinto (rice and beans), ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime juice), and casado (a traditional dish with rice, beans, meat, and vegetables).

The country is also known for its coffee, which is considered some of the best in the world. If you're a coffee lover, make sure to try some of the local blends and take a tour of a coffee farm.

In addition to coffee, Costa Rica also has a thriving craft beer scene, with many local breweries producing high-quality brews. And of course, you can't visit Costa Rica without trying the national drink, guaro, a clear, colorless liquor made from sugarcane.

Activities and Attractions

There are plenty of things to see and do in Costa Rica. Some of the most popular attractions include:

  • Beaches: Costa Rica has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with pristine sand and crystal-clear water. Some of the most popular beaches include Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, and Playa Conchal.
  • Rainforests: the country is home to some of the world's most diverse rainforests, with incredible wildlife and vegetation. Some popular rainforest destinations include the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Corcovado National Park.
  • Volcanoes: within Costa Rica, there are several active volcanoes, including Arenal and Poas. These volcanoes offer stunning views and unique hiking opportunities.
  • Adventure activities: If you're looking for adventure, Costa Rica won't disappoint. From zip-lining through the jungle to white-water rafting, there are plenty of adrenaline-pumping activities to choose from.
  • Wildlife: there is an incredible array of wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, and toucans. Make sure to take a wildlife tour or visit one of the many animal sanctuaries in the country.

Safety

Costa Rica is generally considered a safe country for tourists. However, like any country, there are some precautions you should take to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

  • Be aware of your surroundings: like in any crowded area, keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings. Don't leave valuables unattended on the beach or in your car.
  • Avoid dark or isolated areas at night: while Costa Rica is generally safe, it's always a good idea to avoid dark or isolated areas at night, especially in urban areas.
  • Use common sense: follow your instincts and use common sense when traveling there. If something doesn't feel right, trust your gut and take precautions.
  • Protect against mosquito bites: Costa Rica is home to mosquitoes that can carry diseases like dengue fever and Zika virus. Make sure to wear mosquito repellent and cover up exposed skin, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Currency

The official currency of Costa Rica is the colon (CRC). The US dollar is widely accepted, especially in tourist areas. However, keep in mind that you may not get the best exchange rate, so it's always a good idea to have some local currency on hand.

Credit cards - ahem - are also accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops. However, make sure to check with your bank to see if they charge any foreign transaction fees.

Bottom line

Costa Rica is a beautiful and welcoming country that offers something for everyone. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, Costa Rica won't disappoint. With its beautiful beaches and lush rainforests, it's no wonder that so many people fall in love with this country. So why not plan your own Costa Rican adventure and see what all the fuss is about?
