I talk (or write, if you prefer) a lot about rewards credit cards, and how I try to use them as much as possible, simply, because I like the rewards! But what I don’t talk much about is staying on a budget while using only those credit cards. Today that’ll change. Because that’s exactly what this post is about.
Benefits of credit cards Using credit cards for most of your spending can be very beneficial. I’ve touched on it before. You can earn hundreds of dollars a year in points. And how can I forget about the sign-up bonuses? Most of the time just signing up for a good travel credit card can mean a free round trip flight, or a free night or two at a hotel. Update: Southwest has agreed to temporarily make room for Delta at Love Field until a long term solution is reached.
Things are getting weird at Love Field in Dallas. Call it a love triangle between Southwest, Delta, and the City of Dallas (which owns Love Field). And if we’ve learned anything from Hollywood, it’s that love triangles don’t end well. Naturally, the story playing out before our very eyes is getting messier and messier by the day. Let’s start at the beginning
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Chase Freedom is one of my favorite cards to use. Not only is it a no-annual-fee card, but it also offers a 5x bonus on rotating categories every quarter (up to $1,500 in spend). In order to take advantage of these bonuses, you need to activate it. If you do the math, this means you can earn $300 every year if you max out each quarter. It gets even better if you pair the Freedom with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, which can turn that $300 into an amount much closer to $600.
A few months back I wrote a post on the infamous mile high club, and how only 4% of Americans have admitted to being a part of it.
I’m sure part of the reason is because many are worried they’d get caught. And they’re probably right. But what if I told you there is a way to join the club without getting caught?
Packing is not easy to do. It’s something many people struggle with, especially if you don’t travel much. It’s part of the reason why I wrote a post a few months back giving packing tips.
But, I’m afraid it may soon get harder. The airline industry (specifically, the International Air Transport Association) wants to make your carry-on about 40% smaller than it already is! Seriously. That’s not good for pretty much everyone I know.
This is slightly disturbing. The Transportation Security Administration, whose mission is to protect you while flying is under fire. Again. This time for failing to ID 73 airport employees with links to terrorism. This on the tail of another report that found the TSA failed to find fake bombs strapped on people going through security 95% of the damn time! I mean, what are they doing with that $7.4 billion annual budget? It’s no wonder some media outlets call them the “Three Stooges Agency.” It seems they’re embarrassingly bad at their jobs. But I'll let you be the judge.
Traveling is never cheap. From plane tickets and hotels, to food and booze, there are nearly endless ways to part with your money. And summer is probably the most expensive time to go on vacation.
Let’s face it, that’s why so many people try to take advantage of travel credit cards. Whether it’s an airline branded one, or a hotel branded one, they can save you quite a bit. But there are other ways you can save even more. In fact, there are several ways you can save thousands per vacation. That’s right. Thousands in cold hard cash.
Traveling is a blast. There’s no question about that. But there’s also no question that sometimes the lead-up to a vacation (ya know, when you’re thinking about all the fun things you’re gonna do) is more exciting than the actual vacation. Vacation let-downs suck. But there are ways to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Eat/drink local Doing this leaves things exciting! Why? Because locally owned restaurants are not back at the place you call “home.” Going out to a place where you can’t go to every day is fun. And special. Which is exactly what a vacation should be. As an example, if you go to Jimmy John’s three days a week when at work, going there on vacation would seem kinda lame. I remember going to Vegas for my brother’s bachelor party and we were all looking for a place to eat. Where did we end up going? In ‘N Out Burger! Why? Because there aren’t any where we came from! And it was my first time (which made it even better)! I loved it. That example may initially seem strange. After all, In 'N Out Burger is a chain. But it just shows you that the place you go doesn't need to be a local mom and pop shop. If you're ever in the Chicago area I recommend trying Portillo's. |
